ANXIETY, PAIN, VITAL SIGNS, CHILDREN WITH THALASSEMIA
Impact of Foot Reflexology Versus Simple Massage on Vital Signs, Anxiety, And Pain During Blood Transfusion Among Children With Thalassemia. By Sunita K. Jadhav, Prakash M. Naregal, Vaishali R. Mohite, Rajashri B. Karale. Pub. by Cureus 16(8) (August 26, 2024) : e67876. doi:10.7759/cureus.67876
Most children were diagnosed with thalassemia during infancy, had a history of both parent’s thalassemia minor, and were Rh+ve. Foot reflexology was more effective in reducing anxiety and pain than simple massage. Additionally, foot reflexology had a significant effect on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while simple massage significantly affected temperature in children with thalassemia (an inherited blood disorder).

HEARING LOSS, INFANT, fMRI CASE STUDY.
Effects of foot reflexology on an infant with Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) case study. By Lee Y, Chen M, HaoYan. Pub. by Research Square; 2023. DOI: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-2710677/v1.
Compared with SNHL infants who did not undergo foot reflexology, an SNHL infant treated with foot reflexology exhibited increased regional homogeneity (ReHo) in the frontal cortex, temporal cortex, occipital cortex, and thalamus and decreased ReHo inthe bilateral occipital cortex. This suggests that foot reflexology influences hubs of the brain networks responsible for language and auditory processing. Differences in these areas have clinical significance and may be helpful for treating infants with SNHL.A large-scale, randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm these findings.
PAIN, FEAR, PEDIATRIC ICU, MUSIC THERAPY, HAND MASSAGE
Impact of music therapy and hand massage in the pediatric intensive care unit on pain, fear and stress: Randomized controlled trial. By Dilek Küçük Alemdar, Azime Bulut, Gamze Yilmaz. Pub by J Pediatr Nurs. 2023 Jul-Aug;71:95-103. Epub 2023 May 23. PMID: 37230011 DOI: 10.1016/j.pedn.2023.05.007
It was determined that hand massage and music therapy were more effective than standard care at reducing pain and fear levels during blood drawing among 12-18-year-old adolescents in the PICU.

Pub. by The Scientific Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, (), pp. -. doi: 10.22037/sjrm.2022.117039.3096.
The results showed that reflexology massage has a significant effect on static balance (P=0.0001) and pain intensity (P=0.0001) of young girls with flat foot. However, no significant effect was observed on the arch of the foot (P=0.38) and the dynamic balance (P=0.36). Conclusion: Reflexology massage improves the proprioceptive information of the skin. Accordingly, it has had a positive effect on improving static balance and reducing the pain intensity of girls with flat foot.
PAIN, NEONATE,
Glucose and reflexology for pain relief during arterial puncture in neonates: a protocol. By Thatiane Monick de Souza Costa, Thatiane Evelyn de Lima Fernandes, Silmara de Oliveira Silva, Cintia Galvão Queiroz, Mayara Araújo Rocha, Fernando Hiago da Silva Duarte, Rodrigo Assis Neves Dantas, Daniele Vieira Dantas. Pub. by https://doi.org/10.1590/1983-1447.2022.20220103.en
On one hand, the use of oral glucose is currently very common in NICU care, being considered as a gold standard. On the other hand, reflexology is a new, low-cost strategy. However, there are still no evidence showing which intervention is more effective in neonate environment. The results of this trial will provide new knowledge in regard to the best intervention to relief neonate pain during painful procedures.

The Effect of Educational Program for New Mothers about Infant Abdominal Massage and Foot Reflexology for Decreasing Colic at Najran City. By Awad Mohammed Al Qahtani , Howaida Moawad Ahmed. Compr Child Adolesc Nurs. 2021 Mar; 44(1):63-78. PMID: 32213142 DOI: 10.1080/24694193.2020.1740827
It was possible to conclude that educational programmes for new mothers can augment their knowledge, refine their practices and improve their attitudes in respect of abdominal massage and foot reflexology as a means of treating colic in infants. Thus, the authors recommend that educational programmes constitute a significant means by which abdominal massage and foot reflexology can be promoted as a therapy for the treatment of colic.
ADHD, CHILDREN, HAND REFLEXOLOGY
Research of Hand Reflexology stimulation in Children with ADHD. By LAVRINČÍK, Jan and Kristina TOMÁNKOVÁ. Moscow, Russia, Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Cognitive - Social, and Behavioural Sciences (icCSBs 2020), p. 143-152, 10 pp. 2021. Pub. by European Proceedings of Educational Sciences.
The pilot research carried out showed improvement in some individuals after 90 days of targeted pressure exercises in solving a set of practical tasks. The improvement depended on the extent, form of ADHD, type of task, task time, and other factors and became the basis for further and more extensive study. The study suggests that a higher rate of targeted practical exercises or other appropriate activities may lead to improved fine and gross motoric skills in selected individuals with ADHD.

Effects of reflexology on child health: A systematic review. By Nimet Karatas, Aysegul Isler Dalgic. Complement Ther Med. 2020 May; 50:102364. PMID: 32444044 DOI: 10.1016/j.ctim.2020.102364
In all six of the Randomized Controlled Studies, which included a total of 277 infants and children, the only method used was foot reflexology. Regarding the results of nine investigated outcomes, reflexology was found to be effective in infancy for reducing pain level and regulating heart rate, for increasing oxygen saturation, for relieving infantile colic symptoms, and neonatal abstinence symptoms. Reflexology was also found to decrease spasticity and improve motor skills in children with cerebral palsy, but it failed to produce positive change in regard to constipation and quality of life. Four of the studies were performed in a nursing context, one in midwifery, and one in physiotherapy. Well-structured, randomized controlled double-blind trials are required.
SENSORYNEURONAL HEARING LOSS (SNHL), INFANTS
